The Essential Benefits of Reading to Your Child Every Day

As parents, we're all trying to do our best.

Between work, cooking dinner, cleaning up toys, paying bills, running errands, and trying to find a few minutes for ourselves, it can feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day. We understand because we're living it too. As parents to our daughter Milah, we know what it's like to be exhausted at the end of the day and still want to make sure we're giving our child every opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

That's why reading has become one of the most important parts of our family's daily routine.

The beautiful thing about reading is that it doesn't require a lot of money, special equipment, or hours of free time. Just five to fifteen minutes a day can make a tremendous difference in your child's development.

Research shows that children who are read to regularly develop stronger language skills, larger vocabularies, and better reading readiness when they enter school. In fact, studies have found that children who are read to daily are exposed to hundreds of thousands more words than children who are rarely read to. Some researchers estimate that by age five, children who are frequently read to may hear over one million more words than their peers who are not.

Think about that for a moment.

One million opportunities to learn a new word.

One million opportunities to ask a question.

One million opportunities to connect with someone who loves them.

Plus reading is about so much more than books.

When we sit down with Milah and read a story, we're not just teaching her letters and sounds. We're teaching her how to listen, how to imagine, how to ask questions, and how to understand the world around her. We're helping her build confidence and we're creating memories. We're showing her that books are places where adventures begin.

As African American parents, reading also gives us an opportunity to introduce our daughter to stories that celebrate culture, history, family, and identity. We want her to see characters who look like her, dream like her, and experience the same sense of wonder that she feels every day. We want her to know that her story matters and that she belongs in the pages of books.

Reading together also strengthens the parent-child bond. In a world filled with screens, notifications, and distractions, story time creates a space where children feel seen, heard, and valued. Those few quiet moments spent turning pages together often become the moments children remember most. The good news is that you don't have to be a teacher or literacy expert to make a difference. Your child doesn't care if you read every word perfectly. They simply want to hear your voice, share your attention, and experience the story with you.

So tonight, grab a book. Any book!

Read before bedtime, after dinner or read while snuggled on the couch. You can also read in the car while waiting for practice to start.

Just read.

Those few minutes each day are helping build a foundation that can last a lifetime. At Milah's Storybook Corner, that's exactly why we create books. Every story is designed to spark imagination, encourage curiosity, celebrate diversity, and help families create meaningful moments together. Whether you're exploring an aquarium, sailing on a ship, celebrating a holiday, or discovering a magical new world, our stories are created with love by parents who believe every child deserves to fall in love with reading.
